Coming to Grips with Reality

"Oh sure, Mom has forgotten her keys/sweater/wallet,
but that is because she is getting older. There is nothing really wrong with her."

"Well she needs a bit more care than she used to, sometimes she doesn't remember to turn the stove off after making dinner, but she's mostly fine with living on her own."

These are the excuses we make for our parents, until the doctor tells us it's the early stages of dementia or Alzheimer's. A death sentence in our minds. Now what?

As a caregiver, or future caregiver, you should talk to your loved one. Tell them you will be there for them, they don't need to go it alone. If you don't know what to say, contact your local Alzheimer support organization.

Then tell others. Don't be embarrassed, share what is going on with those closest to you. Here's what one early stage patient said: “It’s a funny thing. Some of the people I was most worried about telling turned out to be really understanding. There were others too, though, that just didn’t understand at all.”

And we're here to help. We've been through this process and know what to expect. We can help you find the right support group, locate care facilities for the future and make plans so that everyone can be prepared. If you don't know where to turn or what to do next, drop me an email.

The World of Paybacks, Referral Fees and Perks

GlaxoSmithKline, one of the largest drug companies in the world, recently sent a ripple through the industry that they were going to STOP paying doctors to push their drugs.

Wait a minute - doctors pushing drugs? We thought drug pushers were those shady characters hiding on dark porches on streets you don't walk down. No, the medical industry is rife with paybacks, referral fees and more perks than your congressman. Yes, drug companies not only give free samples to doctors to pass on to patients (everyone has received some) doctors also get free lunches, comps to conventions as well as the obvious lunch from the sales rep.

So what changed the CEO at GlaxoSmithKline's mind about payouts? There are allegations about bribery in China. They have paid out millions (billions actually) in settlements, and there is a new law that requires that drug makers disclose payments made to doctors who speak on behalf of the company's products at conferences and other gatherings.

We have never, and will never, accept a fee from any agency, facility or other company. We strive to be transparent so that our clients get the best service for their needs. We applaud what GlaxoSmithKline is doing and hope the rest of the industry follows suit.
